Designing a reference-level listening environment in a residential setting often requires balancing competing priorities between acoustics, architecture, and aesthetics.  In this case, the client’s goal was clear: create a dedicated listening room where musical accuracy, long-term comfort, and immersion were paramount.

For Restrepo Innovations, a firm known for delivering complex residential systems in high-end environments, the project demanded an approach that treated the room as a complete system rather than a collection of components. The client, a lifelong music enthusiast and recording artist, viewed the space as a personal sanctuary, with the surrounding home designed around it.

The room itself introduced both opportunities and challenges. Constructed as a concrete enclosure to maximize isolation, it provided structural advantages while creating a highly reflective acoustic environment. At the same time, strict aesthetic requirements, influenced by the client’s spouse, an ultra-high-end interior designer, limited the use of conventional acoustic treatments.

“This wasn’t about creating something that sounded impressive for a short demo,” said Michael Restrepo, founder of Restrepo Innovations. “It had to be a system you could listen to for hours without fatigue.”

Engineering Around Constraints with an Audio-First Approach

Restrepo Innovations approached the project through multiple design iterations, evaluating materials, finishes, and furnishings not only for their visual impact, but also for their acoustic performance. Every decision required coordination between architectural intent and system engineering.

Based on prior experience, Restrepo selected Grimani Systems as the foundation of the audio design.

“The goal was to create an experience that doesn’t demand effort from the listener,” Restrepo said. “You’re not analyzing the sound. You’re immersed in it.”

Anthony Grimani worked directly with Restrepo Innovations on system design, acoustic strategy, and calibration, ensuring that every element of the room contributed to the final performance. This level of engagement proved critical as the project evolved. Architectural constraints and design priorities created conflicts with optimal system placement, requiring real-time adjustments and collaboration.

“Anthony doesn’t just tune speakers,” Restrepo said. “He owns the room.” Grimani Systems also provided detailed engineering documentation, including system layouts, placement guidelines, and performance requirements. According to Restrepo Innovations, the clarity and completeness of these materials made the installation process highly efficient, even as construction challenges arose.

In one instance, consultation with Grimani led to a change in the room’s construction rather than compromising system performance. That decision reflected confidence in both the design methodology and the expected outcome.

Calibration and Final Performance

Once installation was complete, the system was calibrated as an integrated environment, aligning loudspeaker behavior with the room’s acoustical characteristics. The focus was not only on achieving accuracy, but also on ensuring long-term listening comfort.
